M'Shulla's mother, Hortense Scott, was an organizer for the civilian resistance movement, so it isn't so difficult to see how M'Shulla might have been influenced by her example to join Killraven's Freemen after ten years of enslavement in the Martian gladiatorial pits. As his alias, Bloodarrow, indicates, M'Shulla is a skilled marksman whose weapon of choice is the crossbow.
