D. Oswald Heist is a famous Cyclopean writer from Quietus, who wrote "A Night Time Smoke" (one of Alana's favorite books) and "In Lieu of Flowers (for which he is most well known)." According to Prince Robot, Heists' books are "thinly veiled treatise[s] on radical pacifism," and they inspired Alana and Marko to commit their crimes. Heist himself says he just wrote it to make money and it's a "piece of shit." Heist still lives on Quietus in a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere by himself. He had a son named Parone, but after returning from fighting for Landfall in the war, Parone committed suicide. While Heist is hiding Alana, Marko, and Hazel he gets a visit from Prince Robot, who wants to question him about his subversive literature. Heist tries to deceive Prince Robot, but suddenly Gwendolyn bursts in searching for Marko. Heist goes to pull his gun on her, but she is quicker, and she kills Heist with her lance.
