Debbie Santalesa was an abused girl who was employed in a scientific experiment in which she was brought into contact with the Witchblade, and it bonded with her. Debbie escaped with the Witchblade and lived on the streets with it until she was found by Akane Nakiko, who convinced her to fight the Witchblade's will. The gauntlet then fell off and Nakiko was able to pick it up, becoming the new Witchblade Bearer.
