Merlyn est un humanoïde mâle dont l'origine est incertaine. Il a l'apparence d'un homme âgé, aux longs cheveux gris et aux yeux bleus. Au fur et à mesure que la légende se répandait, Myraddine était un jeune prêtre du soleil sur une île appelée Ruta, à côté d’Avalon, des îles qui faisaient autrefois partie de l’Atlantide et qui ont survécu à la Grande Cataclysme survenu vers 18000 avant J.-C. Il a également servi comme Sorcier Suprême pendant un certain temps, et est l’un des êtres centraux de l’Autre monde, un royaume en dehors de l’Omnivers, et s’est chargé de manipuler les événements au profit de l’existence continue de toute la réalité.
