Jamais nommé par son nom, il est collaborateur de la rédaction et l'adjoint de Monsieur le rédacteur-en-chef au journal Polite (en fait le journal Pilote, que Goscinny avait co-fondé avec Jean-Michel Charlier en 1959). Grand et gros, en pantalon et chemise, les manches retroussées, il tient perpétuellement un long sandwich en main, quelle que soit l’action : ce personnage est la caricature de Jean-Michel Charlier, comme le rédacteur-en-chef est la caricature de René Goscinny.
