Matthew Ryder was a member of the Linear Men, a team of time-traveling scientists who monitored the timestream for irregularities. He was recruited from the primary future, in which Monarch did not rise to power. During the Crisis in Time, the original Waverider (who was the Matthew Ryder from Monarch's alternate future) was killed by Extant. The primary Matthew Ryder agreed to be transformed into a new Waverider in order to continue the fight.
