Cernunnos, the Celtic and Gallo-Roman God with the horns of a ram, supposed to be a God of animals, fruitfulness, and nature, became associated with the Wiccan Horned God through Margaret Murray's now discredited Witch-cult hypothesis of the early 20th Century. Gerald Gardner adopted Murray's research when he developed the Wiccan religious movement. In Wiccan tradition, the Horned God represents the cycles of life, death, and rebirth in a figure who is an amalgamation of Celtic/Gaulish god Cernunnos, the Greek God Pan, The Green Man motif, and various other horned spirit imagery. In the Dawn comic mythos, Cernunnos is the God of death and Dawn's lover. Generally depicted as a ram-horned skull atop an armored male figure with a dark cape, Cernunnos finds corporeal form in the body of Darrian Ashoka in post-apocalyptic New York City.
