Part of the The Shaggy Man mantle · 2 known bearers →
The Shaggy Man first appeared in Justice League of America #45 (1966-06), published by DC. 3 appearances are indexed across 2 series.
The first Shaggy Man was created accidentally by Professor Andrew Zagarian while experimenting in the hopes of finding a synthetic substitute for lost human tissue. He combined a substance he created, "plastalloy," with salamander DNA and due to an error, the artificial body he was using for his experiments grew into a hairy giant. The Shaggy Man is immortal and invulnerable, can regenerate lost body parts and adapt to attacks made against him. He has a heightened sense of smell, does not require sustenance, and has superhuman strength and stamina. When the Shaggy Man went on a rampage, the Justice League of America was unable to stop him, so the Flash suggested that Zagarian create a [second Shaggy Man][29306] to battle the first. The Justice League sealed the two beasts in a pit in the ground to fight each other forever. One Shaggy Man was later freed by Hector Hammond, who was seeking revenge against the Justice League. Green Lantern shrank this creature down to miniature size and imprisoned him. This Shaggy Man was possibly destroyed when the Justice League satellite exploded during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
