Dr. Araman Nila, an Indian radiation expert, brought his knowledge of irradiating common materials with him to the US after leaving India to avoid government service. He invented the Nila Pile, a revolutionary method for harnessing substantial amounts of energy. However, an earthquake struck his laboratory, and he and his colleagues were altered, gaining superhuman abilities and becoming known as the Lords of Light and Darkness. They battled against X-Men and Spider-Man before being transported into space. There, they were transformed once more, becoming an energy state that was perceived from Earth as a new star.
