Gutter Pete is a long-standing adversary of Popeye, making his debut in the inaugural issue of Bud Sagendorf's Popeye comic book. Seeking revenge, Pete confronted Popeye at the Rough House Café. At the time, Popeye had sworn off fighting after promising Olive Oyl to give up violence, leaving him defenseless against Pete's relentless assault. Despite being unable to fight back, Popeye's incredible resilience outlasted Pete's energy. Exhausted from throwing punches, Pete ultimately collapsed from sheer fatigue.
