In 1965, Chet Edson is one of many young scientists attempting to create an interplanetary rocket ship. His fiancée, Claudia, expresses concern that he has been neglecting his factory in order to work on his rocket. She tells him that she doesn't trust his superintendent, Nelson. Later, at his laboratory, Chet is attacked by Nelson, who intends to kill him before he finds out about the shortages of the accounts at the plant. Nelson knocks Chet out and dumps his body in the rocket ship, then sends it off into space. The lab catches fire and Nelson is killed, but the burned body is believed to be Chet's. Chet wakes up as the rocket approaches Jupiter. He is unable to reverse engines before it crashes. Dorna, princess of the Jupiterians, has Chet brought to a laboratory, but she is informed that he is dying. She suggests they attempt to transfer his spirit into the body of Auro, their deceased leader. Chet wakes up and sees his lifeless body lying next to him. Dorna informs him that he is now Auro, leader of the last of the Jupiterian civilizations. She tells him that the original Auro was betrayed and killed by her stepbrother, who has joined the Underworlders. Chet agrees to become the new Lord of Jupiter.
