A century in the future, Dr. Michael Grant developed an amazing mutagenic chemical he called Cortexin, which had the effect of physically and mentally evolving animals. It was at this time that the world suffered a global catastrophe referred to as The Great Disaster, which completely devastated the Earth. The Cortexin leaked into the world's water supply, causing animals to evolve and humans to devolve across the globe. One group of scientists were able to survive in a self-contained research center which they called the Tracking Site. Over a number of decades, they developed the technology to bioengineer three boys who could absorb radiation and transform it into an organic metallic shell. They were born with syntheic structures called cyclo-hearts, which control the transformation. Years later, the community fell victim to the morticoccus germ, and the survivors left Earth in a spacecraft. Ben Boxer, Steve, and Renzi wandered the planet, searching for fellow humans. Ben befriended Dr. Canus, a highly evolved canine, and the two worked together for a time. Later, Ben and his friends met and aided Kamandi, the last boy on Earth.
