Medusa was one of three Gorgons, all of whom had live venomous snakes for hair. Their appearance was so hideous that anyone who looked upon them was turned to stone. Her sisters, Euryale and Stheno, were immortal, but Medusa was not. She was beheaded by Perseus, who used her head to save Andromeda from the sea monster, Cetus.
