During World War I, Barton developed his drawing skills and laconic humour. He was wounded but his time in hospital was put to good use, beginning to draw cartoons. When the war ended, he attended the London School of Arts. From 1935 to 1970, he was resident artist at Luna Park and is regarded as one of Australia's finest exponents of fairground art. He also had other dreams, and wanted to emulate Stan Cross, the most popular Australian cartoonist of his day, and Syd Nicholls, author of the comic strip Fatty Finn. He produced a wealth of cartoons, comic strips and comic books, much of it unpublished until after his death. In the 1940s he drew some Frank Johnson one-shots and Gem Comics, and worked for OPC's Hurricane Comics. His comic books had themes relating to the Australian outback and he also delved in science fiction.
