While going through the U.S. Army's basic training at Camp Roberts in California during 1941, Eller created the comic A Rookie in Roberts, which went through several editions and printings as well as being adapted for several other camps and military bases. A syndicate version of the comic strip, A Rookie in Training Camp, appeared in various camp newsletters and newspapers until Eller went to serve in the Second World War's Pacific Theater. After the war, Eller continued in a career in architecture design and, with Ralph Sounik of Design Associates, founded SEM Architects. They designed the famous Kahiki Supper Club in Columbus, Ohio, one of the largest tiki-themed restaurants in the United States.
