Day studied art and political science at the University of Florida. After graduating, he worked for a number of art departments for an unknown number of newspapers as an illustrator. Bill worked on political cartoons in his spare time. Day was hired as a full-time editorial cartoonist by the Philadelphia Bulletin (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) in 1980 and continued there until 1982 when the newspaper folded. Then he was hired by the Memphis Commercial Appeal (Memphis, Tennessee) in 1982 and continued there until 1985. Bill then started working for the Detroit Free Press (Detroit, Michigan) from 1985 to 1998. Day returned to the Memphis Commercial Appeal in 1998 and stayed there until he was laid off due to budget cuts in 2009. Due to lack of work, Bill had trouble paying the bills and nearly lost his house. In 2012, friends and cartoonist Daryl Cagle started an online crowd-funded campaign to keep Day employed as a cartoonist for a year. The campaign raised $42,264. In 2013, he had to deal with the issue of plagiarism in one of his cartoons, using artwork from the deviantArt website. Bill stated that he thought he was using artwork from an existing picture. The cartoon was pulled from syndication and an apology issued by Cagle for Day for its use. In 2014, Day began contributing editorial cartoons to the SaintPetersBlog and FloridaPolitics.com (St. Petersburg, Florida). His cartoons were originally syndicated by the United Media Enterprises through its United Feature Syndicate and United Press Syndicate until 2010 when it became the Universal Uclick. Day would join Cagle Cartoons to syndicate his cartoons in 2011.
