Anthea Bell was a noted translator, translating the works of Stefan Zweig, Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud, Otfried Preussler, Saša Stanišić, Cornelia Funke, W. G. Sebald, and Erich Kästner amongst others. She is best known for her work with Derek Hockridge in translating the Franco-Belgian comic Asterix for an English-speaking audience. She is credited with changing the name of Panoramix, the druid character, to Getafix and making sure the comedic language in the series translation was funnier to English language readers. During Bell's life, she received the German Cross of Merit and the Order of the British Empire (OBE), amongst her awards.
