President, Publisher, Vice President, Chairman of the Board (amongst many titles), and co-owner of Street and Smith, from April 1938 to August 26, 1959 when the company was sold to S. I. Newhouse and his Condé Nast Publications. Allen previously worked twenty years for Curtis Publishing Company as an ergonomics expert, and made money from a new printing process he invented and patented in 1923 that prevented offsetting during the printing process by using paraffin wax. He filed for patent on March 14, 1922 and received patent number 1,445,273 from the U.S. Patent Office on February 13, 1923. On February 8, 1951, he received another patent for the creation of a container to store paper, notes, and the like (publications in differing types of bindings and formats), Patent # 2,701,677). He co-received patents on October 9, 1917, with William H. Shuster, Jr., for a work and time indicator that printing paper records the times machinery went idle (Patent # 1,242,483) and on October 22, 1935 with Harry C. Cole, for a closed dispensing container (Patent # 2,018,552). Grammer also has the distinction of being a part of U.S. tax law in a case cited over the sale of a residence deemed abandoned that resulted in a capital loss, in 1949 (Allen L.
