Born and raised in Czechoslovakia, Šimek escaped the country during the so-called Prague Spring of 1968. He eventually settled in The Netherlands. After college, he became a successful tennis coach. He later became a radio and television presenter, specializing in an idiosyncratic way of interviewing. Under the pseudonym AnoNe (the words 'yes' and 'no' in Czech) he publishes black-and-white cartoons, especially in De Groene Amsterdammer.
