Joe Bruchac is an enrolled member of the Nulhegan Band of the Abenaki Nation, and is an Elder among them. He was brought up in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and as of 2022 still lived there. He has a B.A. from Cornell University, an M.A. from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. from Union Institute of Ohio. He has published numerous books, and won multiple awards for his work -- he's also noted as an oral storyteller. According to his web site, "Although his northeastern American Indian heritage is only one part of an ethnic background that includes Slovak and English blood, those Native roots are the ones by which he has been most nourished."
