Richard Gilliam obtained an MBA from the University of Alabama. He did his first professional writing, mostly sports-related newspaper articles, in nearby Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He became active in comic book collecting in the 1970s, meeting researcher Gene Reed, writing for science-fiction fanzines, and working on conventions (both comics and sf). He also became a contributor to *Overstreet's Comic Book Price Guide* from the late 1970s into the 1980s. From 1980-1984, Richard contributed to APA-I and published *The Miscellaneous Review*, credited as Rick Gilliam. In the 1990s he began writing and editing professionally. Though working on may comic titles for publisher [gcd_link_indicia_publisher](1063), [gcd_link_issue](97778) is the only book he is credited on. After he left the company, he began working as an editor at All Media Guides, databasing computer games, motion pictures, and music.
