Direttore di Novella e fondatore di Bella, scrisse romanzi polizieschi, rosa, western e di fantascienza. Con la serie del Duca Lamberti (Venere privata, Traditori di tutti, I ragazzi del massacro), portò il giallo italiano in una Milano realistica e amara. Le sue opere ispirarono film e adattamenti a fumetti. In suo onore è nato il Premio Scerbanenco per la narrativa noir.
