Susan attended California State University, Long Beach, where she achieved her bachelor's degree in 1972, and later earned a master's degree. After a stint as a freelance writer, and a 10 years teaching composition at the Universities of Minnesota and Wisconsin, she started teaching English at Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley. Susan served as a part of a team founding the Middle College High School Program at Riverside Community College, retiring in 2009.
