Charles Zerner and Kermit Jaediker were two reporters who co-wrote the Vic Jordan comic strip for the liberal New York PM newspaper in the 1940s, using the pseudonym "Paine", after Thomas Paine. Probably Charles S. Zerner, 1898?-August 17 1956, who was a New York Times reporter from 1924-1956, although the Times obituary does not mention the strip nor the PM newspaper. The New York Times did not print comic strips.
